About Us
Ava Sturgeon, the owner of Whirligigs4All.ca, grew up on Grand Manan Island. Many hours were spent in her father's trap shed playing around the types of equipment used to make the whirligigs and helping to paint lobster trap buoys. Early, hand-held whirligigs, with the paddles whittled out of wood by hand, often came home from the shed at the end of the day. When the idea for the new business was born, these fond memories encouraged Ava that this dream could come true. The whirligigs are constructed from wood purchased at the local hardware store. Templates are used to draw on the wood. The wood is then cut, drilled, sanded and painted by hand and packaged. This whole process takes place in Ava's home. The cutting shop is in the same area of her house where her father built some of his lobster traps. The paint shop is in a sun porch that faces the road. Early mornings, Ava is often out there working away as the sun comes up and the local fishermen are going back and forth to the High Seas Convenience store - across the street - getting their morning coffees and lunches - before heading out on their boats. Ava has maintained this small business since 2015, and produces all items herself. She loves feedback and is open to doing special order gigs if she does not make what you are looking for. She also restores old gigs in need of love.
